Research Interests

Despite decades of geophysically driven investigations of continental margins, we still do not have a clear understanding of how continents initially separate at the earliest stages of new ocean basin formation. The student will be part of a new initiative in the Department to resolve these questions using the latest integrated geophysical and geological techniques, as applied to continental margins where break-up was accompanied by intense magmatic activity. The DPhil student would interpret refraction and reflection seismic data, and integrate this with constraints from interpretation of potential field data, all calibrated by available borehole data.
