Traditional boundaries between disciplines are often rather artificial but can inhibit the flow of ideas and methodologies between them. The OxfordMicromechanics group is based in Materials where we study deformation processes in structural engineering materials. Tools we have developed for micromechanical testing, and mapping local stress states and dislocation densities are also finding application in minerals where mechanistic understanding of deformation processes are needed to underpin and inform extrapolation from laboratory accessible conditions to those present in the upper mantle and lower crust.
