Research Interests

Nitrogen is the principal limiting nutrient in the biosphere with its over use in agriculture resulting in catastrophic disruption of the N-cycle. Our aims are to understand the role of root colonization by bacteria in global nitrogen cycling and to use synthetic biology to engineer new nitrogen-fixing symbioses in grasses. This requires us to understand the molecular basis for bacterial entry into roots and how bacterial communities function in the rhizosphere.

Associated Research Streams

nitrogen-fixation, roots, rhizosphere, plant-microbiology, legumes, nodulation
