Gioele Passoni

Academic Profile

I have a BSc in Natural Sciences from the University of Milan and a MSc in Conservation Science from Imperial College London. For my Master’s thesis, I designed an evidence-based framework for wind farm spatial planning based on impacts on wolf habitat in Croatia. Following my Masters, I was a research assistant at UFZ-Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (Leipzig). My research focused on modelling functional landscape connectivity using Agent-Based Modelling, as well as on the evaluation of the Common Agricultural Policy with respect to its own objectives and to the Sustainable Development Goals. Finally, I am a representative member of the IUCN-CEM in the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP AG7), aiming at developing ecological connectivity in the Alps.

Current Research

I am interested in understanding the complex socio-ecological interactions between biodiversity, people and the landscape they inhabit. I started my PhD in Oxford in September 2017 under the supervision of Prof Tim Coulson and Dr Francesca Cagnacci (Fondazione Edmund Mach, Italy). The project aims to investigate animal movement and ecological connectivity for multiple mammal species in the Alps. In particular, connectivity will be studied with a functional approach by considering the different ecological processes occurring in the landscape and among the different focal species. To do this, the project will mainly focus on animal movement, species interactions and anthropogenic impacts using GPS tracking data.
