Charlie Bates

Academic Profile

Prior to coming to Oxford, I studied Earth and Planetary Science at the University of Manchester, where I undertook a wide range of research projects focusing on topics including zooarchaeology, functional morphology, and macroevolution.

Current Research

My project focuses on understanding the Cambrian Explosion, arguably the most significant event in the history of life on Earth. Specifically, I study how and why the diverse animal body plans that have dominated since evolved. I primarily focus on the evolution of microstructure during this period, but also use evolutionary simulations to answer questions that the fossil record cannot.
