Eleanor Ainscoe

Academic Profile

I have BA and MSci degrees in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge. After a grounding in Maths, Materials Science, Earth Sciences and Chemistry I specialised in Geological Sciences. My masters project title was “The Geometry of Active Normal Faulting in the Aegean”.  My D.Phil project researched the active faulting and tectonics of Central Asia. The region is a major component of the India-Eurasia collision and also has a history of damaging earthquakes. My work combined fieldwork and remote sensing techniques including using optical imagery, digital elevation models and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) to look at how past earthquakes have influenced the landscape around them. I got my doctorate from Oxford in 2018.

Current Research

Since Nov 2018 I have been employed as an Earth Observation Scientist at HR Wallingford Earth Observation and data science for the water, health and infrastructure sectors. My work involves developing systems that use satellite images for a range of applications across the Environmental Sciences, including a forecasting system for dengue fever https://www.hrwallingford.com/projects/d-moss-dengue-forecasting-model-satellite-based-system , a system to monitor dams remotely https://www.hrwallingford.com/projects/damsat , and research into using satellite data to measure the impact of floods.  I definitely use the skills I acquired during my D.Phil in my job.
